Speaking at a banquet hosted by Turkish President Abdullah Gul at the Cankaya Presidential Palace in Ankara, the Queen said the ties between Turkey and the United Kingdom were stronger than ever in this new century.
Turkey played a key role in promoting peace, political stability and economic development in some of the worlds most unsettled areas, she said.
President Gul said that the United Kingdom has been one of the staunchest supporters of Turkey in its progress towards the EU membership.
Turkey is grateful for your unhesitant and continuous support, he said.
This visit is an indication of strong relations between Turkey and the United Kingdom, and will further strengthen our strategic partnership.
The history of peoples of Turkey and the United Kingdom were linked in an inseparable way.
Our armies confronted each other from time to time, said Gul.
However, at the same time our armies battled boldly against common enemies and sacrificed their lives. Relations between our countries have affected the tide of events in Europe for centuries.
Being allies, Turkey and the United Kingdom protected freedom and democracy in Europe, took their responsibilities to give direction to developments in Europe seriously, and did not remain as spectator to the opportunities that arose, he said.
