Turkish NGOs to call for easing of political tension

Tension is on the rise in Turkey with the ruling party accused of trying to undermine secularism and claims a shadowy right wing group was plotting to instigate a coup.

ANKARA - Seven of Turkey’s leading non-governmental organizations are to issue a statement Wednesday calling for a scaling back of tensions in the political arena, claiming that the nation is at risk of being polarized.

The groups, including the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), the Turkish Confederation of Public Laborers’ Unions (Kamu-Sen), Turkish Confederation of Labor (Turk-Is), Turkish Confederation of Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESK), Moral Rights Workers Union (Hak-Is), Turkish Confederation of Employers’ Unions (TISK) and Turkish Agricultural Chambers’ Union (TZOB), represent a large cross section of Turkish society.

Following meetings on Tuesday, it was agreed that representatives of the groups would hold press conferences simultaneously in all 81 provinces of Turkey Wednesday morning.

According to Rifat Hisarciklioglu, the chairman of the TOBB, the statement to be read out at the press conferences will be a call for common sense and also proposed measures to ease the tension.
