Turkey’s jobless rate just under 10 percent

Turkey’s unemployment rate is greatly affected by seasonal considerations, with the levels of those out of work falling in rural areas in the summer as the requirements of the agricultural sector demand more labour.

ANKARA - The average unemployment rate in Turkey for last year was just below 10 percent, according to a report prepared by the Turkish Central Bank.

The report, released on Friday in Ankara, said that the country?s unemployment rate for 2007 averaged out at 9.9 percent.

The report also said that the same methods used to calculate the jobless rate in Turkey were also used in the United States.

There have been criticisms of official unemployment figures, With suggestions that the actual jobless rate is much higher than statistics show.
