ANKARA - Turkey’s parliament is meeting in a closed session to debate the recently concluded military operation in northern Iraq, with the opposition having demanded information on whether the cross border strike has curtailed due to US pressure.

The session began Thursday afternoon, with the debate being held in response to a motion submitted by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

Both the CHP and the far right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) have sought information on the operation, which saw Turkish troop cross into northern Iraq on February 21 to strike at bases of the terrorist group the PKK. The operation was concluded on February 29, one day after US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates visited Ankara.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan used its majority to ensure that the debate was not open to the public or the media.
