Turkish government to table new social security legislation soon, says minister

Unions have threatened widespread strike action against the proposed reforms, claiming they undermine workers’ rights.

ANKARA - Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government may table new legislation radically overhauling the country’s social security system before the parliament as soon as next week, a senior minister said Tuesday.

The Social Security and General Health Insurance draft law will most probably be submitted to the Parliamentary General Assembly next week, according to Labor and Social Security Minister Faruk Celik.

However, the government will continue to hold talks with various organizations with an interest in the legislation up until it comes into effect, he said.

Celik said he would meet with executives from the confederations of civil servants and workers on Wednesday to discuss draft law.
