SIIRT - A court in the south eastern Turkish city of Siirt has fined 20 people for using letters banned under a 1928 law on placards at a pro-Kurdish rally in March last year.
The court found the 20 guilty of displaying placards with words containing the letters Q and W, neither of which appear in the Turkish alphabet. However, both are used in Kurdish. All those found guilty were fined 100 New Turkish Lira.
In 2002, the Turkish government lifted bans on teaching and broadcasting in Kurdish.
