Travelling on a Turkish Airlines plane specially sent to the Maldives to evacuate Turkish citizens, the 13 touched down in Istanbul at 9:40 pm.
However, there is still no news of the fate of at least 41 Turkish nationals who were in the region when the series of tidal waves washed over the coastal regions of eight countries. As of Tuesday night, there were 18 Turks unaccounted for in Thailand, six in Indonesia, six in Malaysia, three each in Burma and Sri Lanka, two in the Maldives, two in Singapore and one in India.
The death toll from the tsunamis has reached more than 60,000, with Indonesia the worst affected country.
