The meeting, called after increasing attacks against Turkish citizens employed in Iraq, especially in the transportation sector. More than 60 Turks, the majority of them truck drivers, have been killed in Iraq, both in ambushes or executed by militants after being kidnapped.
A Turkish official, quoted by the AFP news agency, said that Turkey wanted both the US and Iraq to take steps to ensure the safety of Turks working in Iraq.
“This will be an important gathering that will allow the three sides to meet and exchange views,” AFP quoted the official as saying. “We of course have some demands. The United States and Iraq should both take responsibility in providing security for the drivers.”
