Gul, speaking at a press conference in The Hague after meeting with senior EU officials, said he felt the EU would make its decision on whether to open accession talks with Turkey based on the facts, as outlined in the positive report handed down by the European Commission on October 6. EU leaders are scheduled to meet on December 17 to decide on setting a date for the opening of membership talks with Ankara. The Foreign Minister said that Wednesdays meeting had served to give Turkey the opportunity to put its views on a number of issues, not just its EU bid. These included developments in Iraq, Iran and the Caucasus, Gul said. In response to a question, Gul said that non-Muslims in Turkey enjoyed full religious freedom and that many churches had existed in Turkey throughout history, and new churches were being opened. The granting of religious freedom and enabling places of worship was the main right of members of different religions living in one country, he said. | ||||
