Speaking after meeting with senior officials of the AKP Tuesday, Republican People’s Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal said agreement had been reached to only table those amendments to the Turkish Penal Code that both sides had jointly approved.
As such, the proposed amendment to criminalise adultery would not be among the package of changes to the Penal Code that the parliament is due to discuss in its extraordinary session later Tuesday, Baykal said.
Prior to Baykal’s announcement, more than 400 demonstrators gathered outside the Grand National Assembly to protest against the AKP plan.
Among the banners carried by the demonstrators, who represented women’s groups, human rights activists and gay rights organisations, were signs saying “Our bodies are ours, hands off!”.
The protest ended peacefully. | |
