According to municipal and rescue authorities, the count of houses, offices and shops flooded out rose to 2,558 by early Tuesday, with more expected as rains continue. The deluge resulted from a strong weather front moving in across the Black Sea, with heavy rains also paralysing the Adapazari and Izmit regions on the fifth anniversary of the devastating earthquake that killed more than 18,000 on August 17, 1999.
In Istanbul, 70 kilometre an hour winds contributed to the problems of residents and rescue services.
However, despite the dire predictions of officials, the flooding has not been as bad as expected. Initial meteorological forecasts said that Istanbul would get its entire annual rainfall in a single day, flooding much of the city. Only ten people applied to be accommodated in state dormitories.
Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas said that compensation would be provided to those who had suffered losses.
