The Istanbul municipality is considering evacuating low lying areas of the city and from around rivers in the face of the dire warnings from the Meteorology Bureau. Adnan Unal, the General Manager of the Meteorology Bureau said that problems with infrastructure meant that the expected rainfall could cause major flooding. In Istanbul you get major problems if 20 kilos of rain falls into a metre square due bad construction, he said. From today onwards we expect rainfall of 60 kilos and more. Unal said that people residing along the river bank should leave home for couple of days. The Meteorology Bureau also warned that heavy rainfalls are expected in Kocaeli in Turkeys north west and storms in the Dardanelles region. Temperatures are set to fall by six degrees Celsius with the wave of wet weather coming from the Balkans. The Istanbul municipality cancelled all leave for employees and issued a high level alarm status for the city. Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbaş called residents to avoid using private vehicles and make use of public transport instead. | ||||
