Speaking after the execution of a Turkish worker held hostage by a radical Islamist group linked to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul it was impossible to predict what could happen in Iraq.
“Unfortunately, Iraq is problematic,” he said. “Many countries have faced problems in Iraq. So far we have not suffered damage and felt pain, but we unfortunately lost one of our citizens today. We have been continuously exerting intense efforts. I hope that we would rescue remaining Turkish hostages.”
Turkey was working to help restore stability and security in Iraq, Gul said, issues he said were vital to the region.
“Turkey has so far attributed great importance to rapid settlement of stability and peace in Iraq. However, as you see today, there is a serious security problem there. Almost one hundred Iraqis die each day. Our relations will remain as relations with a neighbouring country.”
