In the ceremony held in Turkish capital Ankara the Director General of Security Gökhan Aydner stressed the importance of following up technological developments, improving and establishing national and international co-operation in order to fight against crimes and criminals.
Aydner said that one country’s fight against terrorism and organised crime was not sufficient today, underlining the necessity of international co-operation.
“Europol is a law enforcement organisation which handles criminal intelligence activities of the European Union (EU). Its aim is to improve the effectiveness and co-operation of the competent authorities in the member states in preventing and combating serious forms of international organised crime,” he said.
Turkey is a candidate to become a member of the European Union and hopes to start the negotiation process at the end of 2004. While noting that Turkey was not an EU member, the Director of the Europol, Juergen Storbeck, said that they considered Turkey equal to EU member countries in its projects.
Storbeck stressed that co-operation in countering terrorism was very important for EU and world countries. He warned that terrorism was a global threat.
Storbeck also emphasised that countries should also co-operate against illicit drug trafficking, human and arms trafficking, and forgery of valuable documents and credit cards. Turkey often comes under fire for being the back door of Europe for human and drugs trafficking.
