There was no alternative on the table to the reunification proposals drafted by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, according to US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher. This is the first time the people of Cyprus have had a chance to vote, themselves, on a settlement, Boucher told a press conference in Washington Monday. This is the only one on offer. Theres no Plan B, theres no alternative diplomatic course, theres no promise that, you know, if this gets voted down, well go back the next day and try again. I think everybodys estimate is that theres not a lot of prospects for reaching any other deal, other than this deal. The Annan plan was a compromise in which no party got everything it sought, Bourcher acknowledged but was a proposal that gave clear advantaged for both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. Under the plan, large numbers of Turkish troops would depart from the island, more than 120,000 Greek Cypriots would be able to return to their former homes, and Turkish Cypriots would be able to enter the European Union May 1 as part of a new Cypriot federation, he said. | ||||
