Cigarette price rises up to companies: Minister
Price rises are one way to discourage smoking says Unakitan.
March 2 - It is up to private cigarette manufacturers to decide whether to pass on some or all of the recently announced tax increases on tobacco products to consumers, Turkey’s Finance Minister said Monday.

Speaking in Prague, where he was holding meetings with European Union officials, Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan said talks were continuing with private tobacco firms over the increase to the tax rate.
“We increased tax rates. Will both the private sector and TEKEL (Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Salt and Alcohol Enterprises) increase the prices of cigarettes? It depends on their sales policy,” he said.
While the government has been pushed by the International Monetary Fund to boost state revenue to pay for above inflation increases in salaries and pensions, Unatikan also said there was a public health factor in the price rises for cigarettes.
“Turkey is one of the cheapest countries in terms of cigarette prices,” he said. “Smoking is hazardous to the health. However, we can’t advise people to give up smoking. We warn our citizens by increasing taxes.”
