Syria welcomes Turkish mediation with Israel
Both Tel Aviv and Damascus are cautious though hopeful for Turkish plans to try and get the two sides to sit down for peace talks.
January 26 - Damascus has welcomes Israel’s acceptance of a Turkish offer to mediate in the stand off between the two countries, with Syria’s Information Minister wishing Ankara every success in its peacemaking efforts.

       Though not a ringing endorsement of the proposal by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoan to try and promote a settlement between Tel Aviv and Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Ahmad Al-Hassan said Sunday the acceptance by Israel of Ankara’s offer was positive.
       “If Erdoan has proposed to do something about the peace process, we wish him success in his efforts,” al-Hassan said. told a
       “Maybe he can convince the Sharon government to stop its violations of international law and its refusal to implement Security Council resolutions,” he said.
       Israel accepted Turkey’s offer to mediate in the conflict between itself and Syria on Saturday, with Erdoan announcing that his offer had been accepted during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
       The Israeli foreign ministry has stressed that even though it has agreed to Turkey’s intervention, it does not mean the Jewish state has accepted Damascus’s peace overtures.
