Known in Turkey as Noel Baba, Saint Nicholas was a 4th century Christian bishop, famed for leaving anonymous gifts for young girls who could not afford a dowry for their wedding. Among the ways that he would secretly deliver his gifts was to drop a purse of money down the chimneys of the houses where the girls lived. From these acts of charity, came the legend of Santa Claus
Included in the activities will be a service at the Church of Saint Nicholas, which was built in the 3rd century, and which held the venerable priest’s remains, until they were removed by looters and taken back to Italy. A few bones, missed by the grave robbers, are now housed in the Antalya Museum.
Guests from at least 23 countries will be taking part in the four day festival, with 82 children, 33 journalists, 40 teachers and six clergymen being among the international visitors, the Culture Ministry said.
