Speaking at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Monday to welcome the Australian Governor-General Peter Hollingworth, Sezer said that both Turkey and Australia have been elements of stability, peace and wealth in their respective geographical regions. The Australian head of state, as part of his week long visit to Turkey will also be attending the 25th April ceremonies to commemorate the beginning of the land battles of the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915. The Turkish President said that the 150,000 Turks living in Australia had established a bridge of peace between the two countries. The fact the governor-general would be attending the Commemoration Ceremonies for the Çanakkale Wars his shows that the sacrifices made by the Turkish and ANZAC soldiers were left buried in history but were always remembered by both nations with appreciation and gratitude, Sezer said. Hollingworth said that the Gallipoli Campaign had been a turning point in the history of both nations and said that the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had demonstrated his skills of leadership during the battles. | ||||
