| | | A photographic display of the work being done at the city of Allianoi, near the western Turkish town of Bergama, has opened in Izmir. The display, entitled Allianoi in Water, shows the results of the four years of excavations at the site as well as many of the priceless artefacts that have been recovered to date and will be open to the public until 12 March.
The city was known as a centre of health with its famous Roman Baths, which have been preserved for centuries under the regions tobacco fields. The site of Allianoi, a city established more than 2,200 years ago, is spread over an area of over 40,000 square metres of land and reputedly has the best preserved and most extensive examples of Roman baths in the world.
The head of the excavation team, Ahmet Yara?, said that the pieces rescued were of universal value and that they would try to unearth as many as they can before the city is flooded under the waters of the Yortanlı Dam.
